Yeoval, Molong and the Trip Home
Tuesday the 3rd we left Peak Hill and drove north about 16km to Tomingley. Turned right there to start heading in the direction of home but we would not be arriving home till the next day. I had planned to do a walk in the Goobang National Park. From the map and brochure it looked like the good walks had easy access to the main road. On further inspection it turned out we had to travel 9km on rough gravel to get to the parking ground for the walk. With the van on the back we thought we would give it a miss. So we had time to check out a couple of small towns before stopping at Molong for the night.
First stop was Yeoval. There was of course the mandatory ‘Royal Hotel’.
There is a trail of sculptures from Molong up through Yeoval and beyond which are animals on bikes. Every property seems to have their effort. I think it may be an attempt to keep people awake on the roads. This one in town was an eagle on a penny farthing.
We started walking the main street looking for a coffee. The only thing opened that we could see was a milk bar that did not do coffee. Continued walking and there was nothing opened until the end of town when we came across a shop doing real coffee and it also operated the Banjo Patterson Museum.
Banjo spent his childhood years on a property at Yeoval. So we had coffee and looked around the museum. Then went over to the park where the hat sculpture was a little memorial to Banjo.
We then headed off to Cumnock. We drove the main street but there was really nothing to see, less than Yeoval. But of course there was a ‘Royal Hotel’.
Then on to Molong. More animals on bikes on the way.
Stopped at the start of town for a great pie. Then had a walk around town. A very nice town. When Linda was a little girl she actually stayed in the Molong Post Office accommodation as her grand uncle ran the Post Office.
We had already worked out that the Showground was a good spot. At $10 for power and bore water it was a good deal. It was positioned right next to/on the golf course.
We met very nice neighbours on both sides of us. We sat for an elongated happy hour that night. We had not wound up meeting that many people on this trip so it was nice to finish it off with a good yarn with nice people.
After a great bacon and eggs breakfast to finish the trip we said our goodbyes and headed off. Stopped to boil the kettle overlooking Lake Wallace near Lithgow.
Then it was off home and we arrived about 2pm. It has been a good trip, very relaxing and just what was needed. I loved seeing so many towns that we have never seen before and so much history. In three weeks time, guess what, our daughter Bec heads off on another trip which means I can get Linda on another trip of our own. Just another 10 day trip. You have always got to have something to look forward to. Till then God bless.
