The Trip Plan And Lead Up


Since our last substantial trip away for the month of February this year we had a week away in April at the Corryong Snowy River Bushman's Festival and a four day getaway to the Shoalhaven River west of Nowra for my birthday in July. When I get time (that’ll be the day) I might do a blog to back capture the Bushman’s Festival. They were both great trips. Here are just a few photos:

Okay enough of that. But that has enticed me to back capture the Corryong trip for sure.



So now it is high time to get away again. We were not keen on doing any major trips this year, just several shorter trips. This trip will only be for ten days and we will do another trip for a similar amount of time at the end of September. These two trips coincide with occasions when our daughter, Bec, is away as well. That was Linda's idea and that works for me. Hey whatever is going to get us away caravanning right? I will keep that strategy in mind to enable more trips in the future. Happy wife, happy life.



We are doing a loop in central NSW to take in many towns that we have never spent any time in and some that we have never driven through at all. It will be good to travel on some roads that we have never been on. From Bathurst we head south west to Blayney and Carcoar for the historical buildings. Then to Cowra for the history of the Cowra breakout. We then have to decide if there will be time to go to Grenfell before moving on to Canowindra. Then on to Forbes, Parkes and Peak Hill for more historical buildings, gold mines and the Parkes Satellite dish. From Tomingley we might head home through Yeoval to Molong.



The week to leave finally came around. We were able to factor in sufficient time to get organized. Not being a long trip meant there were not to many jobs to be done at home beforehand. We did not even want to do anything in the way of shopping before leaving as we want to spend the money in the country. So all that was needed to pack the van and move it to a better spot in the yard to get hitched up the day before leaving so we could get away without to much delay. Oh so good to knowing we are about to get on the road!

Yeoval, Molong and the Trip Home

Tuesday the 3 rd we left Peak Hill and drove north about 16km to Tomingley. Turned right there to start heading in the direction of home but we would not be arriving home till the next day. I had planned to do a walk in the Goobang National Park. From the map and brochure it looked like the good walks had easy access to the main road. On further inspection it turned out we had to travel 9km on rough gravel to get to the parking ground for the walk. With the van on the back we thought we would give it a miss. So we had time to check out a couple of small towns before stopping at Molong for the night. First stop was Yeoval. There was of course the mandatory ‘Royal Hotel’. There is a trail of sculptures from Molong up through Yeoval and beyond which are animals on bikes. Every property seems to have their effort. Blayney and Carcoar

Monday morning the 26 th August finally came around. We did not try for an early start as I needed a good night sleep from a lot of night shift that I had been doing. We got away at 10am and headed out to the M7 toward Bathurst. We made it to Bathurst for lunch in Berry Park. We remembered Berry Park as it was our first free camp on the first trip we ever did which was to Lake Eyre. As we have only got ten days we wanted to do a lot of kilometres to get to the point where we were on virgin territory and then slow down and check things out. So we moved on through Blayney to Carcoar Dam. The dam is 13 kilometres south of Blayney and is a great free camp with clean toilets. From there we could check out Balyney and Carcoar. The water level is down a lot but it is very pretty and we had phone and TV reception. I can’t understand why people would want to stay in a caravan park and pay, in this case, $32 at Blayney when we had this at the dam for free. This is our campsite at Carcoar...

Canowindra, Eugowra and Forbes

Thursday the 29 th after leaving the Japanese Gardens at Cowra we drove to Canowindra which was only about 40 kms. The main street of Canowindra follows the winding route of the old bullock track. The many veranda-ed buildings have seen the entire town centre along Gaskill Street classified by the National Trust. It is just such a classic looking old world charm country town. Hopefully the photos show that: We moved on to Eugowra and stopped there for lunch. Eugowra is just a tiny town and its claim to fame is that the richest ever bushranger gold robbery took place five kilometres north of the town. Frank Gardiner and his gang of eight bushrangers robbed a coach with four Police escorts. They blocked the road with two bullockwagons and hid behind boulders. When the coach came around the gang fired their guns, the horses spooked and the coach turned over. Two Police were shot but survived.
